Leisure without Limits/Special Populations

LEISURE WITHOUT LIMITS\r\n\r\nSparks Parks and Recreation supports the Americans with Disabilities Act and strives to comply with all aspects of the law to provide a barrier-free environment and experience. We continually seek to provide positive recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. If you have a disability and would like to request support for a program or if there is a new program you would like to see offered, please contact Shauna at (775) 353-7815 or e-mail recinfo@cityofsparks.us.\r\n\r\nPeople with disabilities who wish to meet new friends through recreational activities will enjoy taking part in our Leisure Without Limits program. Those with developmental and/or physical limitations are encouraged to attend the fun social events offered year-round.\r\n\r\nSPECIAL THANKS TO NELL J. REDFIELD FOUNDATION FOR THEIR SUPPORT!\r\n\r\nFor more details about any of the opportunities listed below, call (775) 353-7815 or email recinfo@cityofsparks.us. Please note: Financial assistance to help with registration fees is available for children, seniors and people with disabilities who cannot otherwise afford to take part in our programs.\r\n\r\nARTS & CRAFTS CLASS\r\n\r\nWe’ve teamed up with VSA arts to provide Weekly Wonders, a craft/art workshop held on Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Larry D. Johnson Community Center, 1200 12th Street. Participants (16 yrs. and older) will develop their artistic abilities through a variety of fun projects. There is space for up to 16, first-come, first-served. Cost is $5 per month/materials fee.\r\n\r\nBOWLING\r\nBring your friends and come out to practice your game every Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. at Wild Island Coconut Bowl! We keep track of scores to average for the Special Olympics tournament in November. Cost is $2 per day for one game. No pre-registration necessary.\r\n\r\nMARK WELLMAN ADVENTURE DAY AT THE MARINA \r\n\r\nFrom kayaking and rock climbing to cycling and sailing, the annual Mark Wellman’s Adventure Day at the Sparks Marina aims to offer plenty of fun and action for disabled residents of Northern Nevada. The event’s namesake, Mark Wellman, is a two-time Para-Olympian, as well as a nationally acclaimed author, filmmaker and motivational speaker. He provides the adaptive climbing equipment for Adventure Day attendees who want to scale the climbing wall at this event.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the opportunity to climb, Sierra Nevada Community Sailing provides adaptive boats, offering Adventure Day participants a chance to try sailing. Disabled Sports USA Far West will bring adaptive cycling equipment to Sparks Marina Park for Adventure Day and guide attendees in the cycling events.\r\n\r\nFor more information on Mark Wellman’s Adventure Day at the Marina, call (775) 353-2376.\r\n\r\nLANDEEZ ALL-TERRAIN WHEELCHAIR\r\nThis specially equipped wheelchair glides over sand, snow, gravel and soft soils, allowing its users closer contact with nature. There is no fee for adults/children with disabilities. Call the Park Ranger Office at 691-9130 to make your reservation.
